Do you really need to memorize the full 7-note major scale? As guitar players who enjoy rock, blues, pop, folk, and country, the truth is that these genres rarely use the full major scale. Last week I said that and the video got lots of great comments, including some who asked, "then how to you know what notes in the scale to target?" True, since the pentatonic scales only have five notes, there are two missing. But those other two notes are in the chord shapes that you already know. And since we almost never play the full 7-note major scales, why bother memorizing them if we really don't need that for either purpose?

We visualize chord shapes on the fretboard that we already know to find and target intervals, and the advantage is that we can imagine each chord as they happen in the song, which helps us to connect our solos to the chords and the song -- that's playing over the changes!
