“The Long Riders” is a Civil War period film that was released in 1980, starring the brothers Carradine, Quaid, and Keach. The film features a glistening soundtrack scored by Ry Cooder, who is a wizard session musician, composer, arranger, musicologist, and one of my all-time favorite guitarists. Some time ago I was playing around in open D (i.e., DADF#AD) tuning and what is presented here just fell out. It’s a medley consisting of 3 excerpts from the film’s score. It opens with the film’s signature theme, followed by “The Ballad of Jesse James”, and ends with “Rally Round the Flag”. The arrangement of “Rally” used here, while included on “Riders”, is more closely patterned after the version Ry used on his 1972 album “Boomer’s Story”. This medley is a lot of fun to play. I set my capo on the second fret here, so technically the medley is in open “E”. This is a redux of a post that I did a few years back. It has better sound quality, as I made a recording mistake last time and was only able to use a single track. In addition, there are a few licks added to this performance which were missing from the original. I hope you enjoy it.
