Varanasi, also known as Benares, Banaras, or Kashi, is a city on the banks of the Ganges river in northern India. It holds a central place in the traditions of pilgrimage, death, and mourning within the Hindu religion. Varanasi is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities, with its history intertwined with the major figures and events of Hinduism. The city's ancient name, Kashi, is associated with a kingdom that existed over 2,500 years ago, and it has been a key center for religious and educational activities throughout its history.

Despite modern challenges, it remains a vibrant city that attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists from around the world, drawn by its spiritual significance, historical depth, and cultural richness.
