I devised this exercise when I was a few years into my guitar journey. I knew all 5 positions of the pentatonic but I found there were a lot of places on the fretboard where I'd run into "dead ends". The flow would come to a crashing halt and I'd have to figure out where the next position was.

If you want to start seeing the pentatonic clearer all over the fretboard, I highly recommend practising this exercise. I'm seeing every string pair as forming a chain, with each 4 note group or cell, forming a 'link'' in that chain. Once you can know this exercise, you'll be on your way to knowing every possible permutation of getting from any one position to another.
