Dust and stone is all that remains of the city of Pompeii. Pompeii froze in an instant, in 79 AD, when it was buried under the ashes of Vesuvius. The ruins of Pompeii are a big city. And walking around these ruins is insanely interesting.

Houses and villas of noble citizens, forum, thermae, temple, amphitheater, lupanarium, antiquarium, necropolis, entrance gates - this is a small list of what you should definitely find among the same straight streets of Pompeii. The preserved frescoes (the same ones many of us have seen in art and architectural history textbooks) are impressive. The urban planning of the city is interesting - regular building, straight and perpendicular lines of streets. There are few crooked roads and no narrow labyrinths, usual for old Italian towns.

You can get to the archaeological park of Pompeii by train from Naples from the stop Piazza Garibaldi. The train takes about 45 minutes and costs 3 euros one way. A ticket to the complex at the ticket office costs 19 euros (free for EU children under 18). You can download an audio guide in advance (MyPompeii app) and listen to stories about the excavations in different languages. Or you can hire a guide to help you organize your route and tell you about the city.
