A cycle ride to the Welsh village of Cymmer and to Afan Forest with views of the rivers Afan and Afon Corrwg along with two viaducts, including the disused iron and stone Cymmer Viaduct. This ride starts at Maesteg taking in some of the National Cycle Network route NCN884.

This ride was an unplanned idea I had on Good Friday as the weather was looking to be pretty good. I decided to head north from Maesteg and just see where the road took me, hopefully ending up on one of the hills to cook a quick meal before heading down.

I was really pleased to find the disused Cymmer Railway viaduct, previously used for a mineral railway line. While the deck of the diaduct is dismantled the rest of the bridge is intact. It is good to see an iron and stone viaduct like this as many of these style viaducts across some of the Welsh valleys have long been dismantled almost completely. It would be nice if one day this could be made into a walk and cycle way, may be even continuing into the old railway tunnel that precedes it that is currently buried under the hillside. I imagine the cost may be prohibitive but these things have happened before. The Rhondda tunnel being the next to possibly being opened.

This was a tough ride with some of the steep climbs but I hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed the views.
