Louise presents a video that demonstrates how she has gained knowledge and experience, (learned) through the process of making a handmade journal. The great value of this demo is the problems encountered and the mistakes made and rectified in the actual process of learning.
Louise first painted a series of hand-coloured papers and there is a video showing the techniques she used to make ethereal seascape papers.
This video shows how the small Sea & Sky journal was made in order to learn and understand the technique on a small more manageable book, almost as a sketch, before attempting to construct a much more ambitious journal. In this way, if the exercise was a failure there would not be too much waste.
The papers leftover from those needed for the larger journal were used to make a small, sewn, hardback journal. The sheets of paper are put into signatures and sewn, glued and bound. Problems are encountered and resolved in the process so that Louise is able to learn through invaluable practical experience.
